Above: "Go West Young Woman," mixed media collage. 2016

After years as a journalist at newspapers big and small (USA TODAY, Orlando Sentinel, Cincinnati Enquirer, to name a few), I began telling stories in a new way: via collage. I'm mostly self taught, and find my materials by cruising yard sales, flea markets, used book stores, thrift shops and back roads, and by diving into errant dumpsters. I badger friends, family, and even strangers for their discards. The older and grungier, the better.

In short: I've no shame when it comes to paper, but I do when it comes to collage making. No photocopies. No computer images. No faux ephemera. Only the real thing. Painstakingly cut, pasted, and glued, layer by layer. Ready to tell a new story. - Sara Pearce
